Money can never truly compensate for the loss of a family member
or loved one.
Still, North Carolina law allows family members to recover
monetary damages for such a loss. These damages attempt to
compensate the surviving family members for the lost income
and financial support formerly provided by the deceased. The
law also seeks to compensate the survivors for the loss of
emotional
support, love and affection caused by the death of their loved
one.
When the death of a family member is the result of someone’s
negligence or misconduct, moving forward with a wrongful death
claim frequently helps to provide the survivors with a sense
of closure. Such cases also serve to punish wrongdoers for their
negligence and ensure that similar tragedies don’t occur
in the future. |
